The CSP Takes a Victory Lap
House and Senate conferees on the Supplemental Appropriations Bill agreed this week to lift the cap on Conservation Security Program funding for 2007. The CSP is a Conservation Title program that rewards farmers for undertaking conservation practices on working farmland. Lifting the funding cap paves the way for a 2007 CSP sign-up in 51 watersheds and ensures funding for contract modifications to enhance conservation measures.
Water Quality Project Reaching Out to More Farmers
Dave and Matt Young of Red Knob
Farm in Pennsylvania and Matt's son Andy have practiced no-till farming
for more than six years and were among the first to join Lancaster Farms
project, a Center for Conservation Incentives project. Since 2004,
Lancaster Farms has worked with a growing number of farmers each year
in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to improve water quality in the
Chesapeake Bay watershed. The project hit the ground with 27 farmers in
2004 and in 2006 grew to include 55 farmers. Now this voluntary,
incentives-based effort to help agricultural landowners improve
nutrient-use efficiency is expanding to more farmers over a wider
geographic range. The new goal is to enroll at least 300 Pennsylvania
and Maryland farmers over the next three years.
The Conservation Foundation
The Conservation Foundation was established in 1972 by business and community leaders as a not-for-profit land and watershed protection organization.
Their mission: to preserve open space and natural lands, protect rivers and watersheds and promote stewardship of our environment.

Agriculture & Water: Green Payments & The Farm Bill
Support is building to shift farm policy towards rewarding farmers for their stewardship, rather than rewarding production of a few commodities. "Green Payments" is the phrase coined to describe incentives that help farmers perform conservation practices on their working lands that result in environmental benefits for everyone. Farmers would earn a portion of their living from producing clean water, healthy soil, and wildlife habitat.
